Gay hookups aren’t the only thing that’s on campus

Two students at Ohio State University are considering a class on gay sex and their campus’ gay hangouts.

One of the students, Jodie Cole, has written about gay hookups in two novels that has won the college’s PEN Award for best book in 2009 and 2012.

She has also shared her personal opinions on sex online.

The other student, Andrew Sullivan, has a book coming out called The Case for Homosexuality: The Real Story of a Man’s Best Effort to Bring a Civil Rights Movement to the White House. (You can see what he has to say here.)

Both women are active in their studies on campus — Sullivan is an assistant professor and Cole an assistant professor of communications and public engagement.

It appears that they are at odds. In a blog post last year, Sullivan wrote that «There is an uncomfortable reality about student life at [Ohio State] that I find deeply uncomfortable, if not offensive,» and wrote that there’s been a «huge uptick in homophobic hate and bigotry since last year. … I think you might find yourself in a bind where you need to look to your own personal resources for information and guidance, or at least be prepared to accept that you might be the last person there to give a shit if you find it offensive or ignorant.»

For a variety of reasons, unions and other groups oppose making companies subject to tougher labor laws — and for a variety of reasons, companies are prepared to take their protest vote to the voters.

As a result of last week’s strike action, workers have called a vote for new municipal spending limits during this year’s election.

In fact, after the company took the action, several big employers began phasing out their UAW representation in their local boards. For instance, the owner of a large construction company had his UAW endorsement revoked on the basis of the company’s decision to stop accepting union representation and offer lower wages. (Some cities have tried to put a cap on how much union representation a company can offer at a local level.)

A second city, Indianapolis, has taken the same step, which it hopes will increase the number of unionized construction companies that it can hire.
